RietveldTV by Mio Hanaoka: Urandâ in Ryukyu and the dream of Baku
Urandâ in Ryukyu and the dream of Baku by Mio Hanaoka Urandâ was the term used to describe Western foreigners in the Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa). The word comes from “Holland.” Okinawa has been part of Japan since 1879, but it was once an independent kingdom. Even after its incorporation into Japan, Okinawan people are still often treated as aliens in Japanese society. At the same time, there is a belief of Marebito in Okinawa, a spiritual or divine being that visits from the “other world” at specific times. By combining elements related to the notion of foreignness in the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom and juxtaposing them with the mythological creature Baku—along with its introduction and transformation in Japan—the video attempts to construct a narrative of historical science fiction based on artistic research. The episode will be broadcast Sunday March 29th, 10pm on the local Amsterdam television channel SALTO1 and is afterwards available on Vimeo. About the Artist: Mio Hanaoka was born in Okinawa, currently based in Tokyo. After studying psychology at Waseda University, she graduated from the Fine Arts department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2011, and completed her postgrad degree at the University of Paris 8 in 2018. She is an artist and an art coordinator of an artist-in-residence in Tokyo. Through various media such as installations, performative actions, guided tours, and sleeping events, she continues to explore how de-individualized experiences can be expressed in relation to durational time and eroticism, and attempts to create vehicles that capture ever-changing existence as “duration.” www.miohanaoka.com ---This Episode is part of the 2025/2026 season of RietveldTV: A DATE WITH THE FUTURE, curated by the current curatorial team: Taša Grujić (VAV), Netta Simola (VAV), Luca Deutinger (DOGtime Expanded Painting) and Herkules Jansson (VAV).

RietveldTV by Olivia Sahl Jensen + Soujourna Jon-Paul: The Raising and Lowering of an Austrian Drape / Rehearsal Number 2, at De Nieuwe Albina
Camera walks towards the middle of the space. There’s a closed curtain. The camera moves through the curtain. On the other side of the curtain the restaurant continues, the space is almost mirrored. As the Camera moves through, the curtain rag folds around the camera and closes the camera off in a square of curtain. From outside someone on a chair reaches for the camera and takes it away from the camera person. Camera is hooked into a construction on top of the curtain. Camera now films a bird’s eye view of the camera person in the curtain square. Looks like a dressing room. Camera person undresses.Note from the curatorial team:Olivia and Sojourna were our first pick for this season due to the playful nature between front- and backstage in Olivia's recent graduation work, using the physical and metaphorical curtain to divide these states of mind. As the narrator directs our view, they skillfully reveal the seams of our constructed reality, with emphasis on the delicate balance between what’s in view and what remains hidden. 🐀This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 24/25: RatveldTV: Two Truths and a Lie.The RietveldTV curatorial team 24/25 were: Saskia den Hartigh (DOGtime), Bjarke Tobias Fuglsbjerg (VAV), Lefteris Katsarakis (VAV), Sara Darle Olsson (Architectural Design). RietveldTV by the Curatorial Team + Erika Roux: RatveldTV – Two Truths and a Lie
Set in the year 2124, the futuristic film imagines the Gerrit Rietveld Academie as a floating campus on a boat. The plot follows two art students navigating the process of admission, completing assignments, and participating in the graduation show, all within one day and in the setting of the academy at sea. The episode expresses and enhances worries and concerns of current students, like the precarity of studying in a crammed, expensive European city and pokes fun at some art-school clichés. It evokes a perpetual lack of time, painting the picture of a frantic, quite literally unstable atmosphere on the boat where things get salty!Starring: Pablo Cuerto Felgueroso Arocha, Polina Ertel and The Swedish Festivities Choir/Svenska Högtidskören (Sara Nygård, Aušrinė Trakanavičiūtė, Ina Felländer).⭐The RietveldTV curatorial team 24/25 were: Saskia den Hartigh (DOGtime), Bjarke Fuglsbjerg (VAV), Lefteris Katsarakis (VAV), Sara Darle Olsson (Architectural Design). Coordinators: Rabea Ridlhammer and Vere van Hal (Public & Projects).Rats spelled backwards is star! 🐀This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 24/25: RatveldTV: Two Truths and a Lie and broadcast on At5.

RietveldTV by Bea Lamadrid Bayón: Where Does Life Happen?
Life happens inside or outside? When I’m walking, do I look at my feet or at the ground? When I have my eyes open, do I see what is there or what I am thinking about?Too many doors, all there facing your body, front, back, sideways, past, present. Choose. Meanwhile, life will do it for you.“Where Does Life Happen?” Is created with archives, playing with the idea of connecting worlds and times. It searches for grief, lighting, celebration and space for the other. The answer is given. Let’s create life together.About the artist:Bea Lamadrid Bayón is a Spanish video artist, performance director, and producer who graduated from VAV - Moving Image in 2024. In her visual work, ranging from videodance and video art to documentary, Bea plays with reality to offer new perspectives, allowing narratives to emerge through encounters between characters, elements, images, and constructed situations. She approaches archives and editing as narrative devices to explore multiple possible trajectories. In her performance practice, she works with social realities, characters, and shifting perceptions to challenge the position of the audience, as well as their relationship to sound and space. Directing the attention toward provocation, intimacy, and human conflict, confronting taboos and emotional tensions. Her next performance "GAZE" will be presented on March 14 and 15 at Droog in Amsterdam.Bea is Co-funder of Piloto (@pilotoclub), a Performance Residency + Event Series in Sevilla. It is a platform that decentralises live art and creates space for experimentation and cross-disciplinary exchange.
