RietveldTV
door Gerrit Rietveld Academie
RietveldTV is Gerrit Rietveld Academie’s monthly TV show. It is broadcast every last Sunday at 10pm by SALTO1 and afterwards forever online on Vimeo. Every month an alum is invited to use the set frame of a 12-minute episode for the development of a new moving image work. Since 2023, every academic year a curatorial team consisting of four students from different departments and academic years is found through an Open Call. The team is guided in their collective process by Public & Projects and a RietveldTV coordinator who is also a Rietveld alum.

RietveldTV by Mio Hanaoka: Urandâ in Ryukyu and the dream of Baku
Urandâ in Ryukyu and the dream of Baku by Mio Hanaoka Urandâ was the term used to describe Western foreigners in the Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa). The word comes from “Holland.” Okinawa has been part of Japan since 1879, but it was once an independent kingdom. Even after its incorporation into Japan, Okinawan people are still often treated as aliens in Japanese society. At the same time, there is a belief of Marebito in Okinawa, a spiritual or divine being that visits from the “other world” at specific times. By combining elements related to the notion of foreignness in the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom and juxtaposing them with the mythological creature Baku—along with its introduction and transformation in Japan—the video attempts to construct a narrative of historical science fiction based on artistic research. The episode will be broadcast Sunday March 29th, 10pm on the local Amsterdam television channel SALTO1 and is afterwards available on Vimeo. About the Artist: Mio Hanaoka was born in Okinawa, currently based in Tokyo. After studying psychology at Waseda University, she graduated from the Fine Arts department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2011, and completed her postgrad degree at the University of Paris 8 in 2018. She is an artist and an art coordinator of an artist-in-residence in Tokyo. Through various media such as installations, performative actions, guided tours, and sleeping events, she continues to explore how de-individualized experiences can be expressed in relation to durational time and eroticism, and attempts to create vehicles that capture ever-changing existence as “duration.” www.miohanaoka.com ---This Episode is part of the 2025/2026 season of RietveldTV: A DATE WITH THE FUTURE, curated by the current curatorial team: Taša Grujić (VAV), Netta Simola (VAV), Luca Deutinger (DOGtime Expanded Painting) and Herkules Jansson (VAV).

RietveldTV by Morgane Billuart: Where is MatrixPlay99?
Morgane Billuart’s RietveldTV episode engages with one of the diverse forms of belief and spirituality to be found on Youtube – manifestations and subliminal music – and how this is used to regulate the menstruation cycle. The film weaves together autobiographical with fictional elements in a clean, beige atmosphere, but soon the smooth surface of the stock image is rippled and the story takes a disturbing twist, leading to an urgent quest, down a vortex of deep research and finally to a discovery within.---This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 23/24: The Third Skin. The RietveldTV curatorial team 23/34 were: Feliz Aaliyah Sanchez Buitrago (Fashion), Mayya Kuznetsova (Fine Arts), Jiyeon Izzy Lee (VAV - moving image) and Karolina Hyun Wilting (VAV - moving image). Together with the artist and Rietveld alum Rosa Doornenbal, the curatorial team of RietveldTV 23/24 – Mayya Kuznetsova, Jiyeon Izzy Lee, Feliz Aaliyah Sanchez Buitrago and Karolina Hyun Wilting – have been developing the first episode of the season.Starting with the question what is RietveldTV, by inspecting previous episodes, collecting impressions of current students and exploring the collection of Sound & Vision (Beeld en Geluid) they conducted an audio-visual investigation to lead them to a clearer idea and an outlook on the future of RietveldTV.By means of a striking detective board and with help of guest host Tunde Dawkins they wove a red thread to make cunning connection and introduce themselves as the curators of the coming season from the depth of the Rietveld basement.Coordinated by alum Rabea Ridlhammer and Vere van Hal from Public & Projects.

RietveldTV by Nomin Zezegmaa: The World is a Womb, The Forest is a Vessel
The World is a Womb, the Forest is a Vessel is a short film that explores lost connections and the unraveling of ties—resembling an endless braiding. The narrative focuses on reconnecting with mountains, lands, and spirits, engaging with them as personified ancestral entities. Through the lens of language, the film also examines the experience of unwilling disconnection, whether influenced by external historical factors or displacement. The World is a Womb, the Forest is a Vessel is an invocation to reflect on these slumbering bonds, in order to awaken an altered way of being in a multispecies world. Note from the curatorial team:The Rietveld TV 23/24 curatorial team invited Nomin Zezegmaa (Fine Arts, 2020)to explore the theme of 'The Third Skin’ for the December 2023 episode.Zezegmaa’s body of work revolves around intricate relationships betweenhumans and the non-human. Zezegmaa was specially chosen for this themedue to her fresh perspective on the interplay between humanity and thenatural world. Acting as a mediator between herself and different entities, shenavigates various layers of interconnection with the earth through shamanicgaze, drawing inspiration from her heritage and employing ritualisticpractices. This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 23/24: The Third Skin. The RietveldTV curatorial team 23/34 were: Feliz Aaliyah Sanchez Buitrago (Fashion), Mayya Kuznetsova (Fine Arts), Jiyeon Izzy Lee (VAV - moving image) and Karolina Hyun Wilting (VAV - moving image). RietveldTV by Olivia Sahl Jensen + Soujourna Jon-Paul: The Raising and Lowering of an Austrian Drape / Rehearsal Number 2, at De Nieuwe Albina
Camera walks towards the middle of the space. There’s a closed curtain. The camera moves through the curtain. On the other side of the curtain the restaurant continues, the space is almost mirrored. As the Camera moves through, the curtain rag folds around the camera and closes the camera off in a square of curtain. From outside someone on a chair reaches for the camera and takes it away from the camera person. Camera is hooked into a construction on top of the curtain. Camera now films a bird’s eye view of the camera person in the curtain square. Looks like a dressing room. Camera person undresses.Note from the curatorial team:Olivia and Sojourna were our first pick for this season due to the playful nature between front- and backstage in Olivia's recent graduation work, using the physical and metaphorical curtain to divide these states of mind. As the narrator directs our view, they skillfully reveal the seams of our constructed reality, with emphasis on the delicate balance between what’s in view and what remains hidden. 🐀This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 24/25: RatveldTV: Two Truths and a Lie.The RietveldTV curatorial team 24/25 were: Saskia den Hartigh (DOGtime), Bjarke Tobias Fuglsbjerg (VAV), Lefteris Katsarakis (VAV), Sara Darle Olsson (Architectural Design). RietveldTV by Roxane Mbanga: Traverser La Tempête
Dakar, November 2023. With a camera in hand, I capture fragments of the capital. My exploration into how the gaze of others influences the perception of our female bodies continues. Here, I collect the stories of Senegalese women. How do they embody their femininity? What is the impact of the women in their surroundings, of society, on their essence? I unveil the city, and these women narrate it for you. Together, we wander through the city via their lived experiences.P.S. from the curatorial team:The reason we invited Roxane is that she is an advocate for women and gives them a voice in her work. Her work in diverse media is intersectional and challenging and takes you to another world, a world that deserves to be seen and heard. We were excited to see her storytelling expand beyond her usual range of media to moving image through our invitation.------This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 23/24: The Third Skin. The RietveldTV curatorial team 23/34 were: Feliz Aaliyah Sanchez Buitrago (Fashion), Mayya Kuznetsova (Fine Arts), Jiyeon Izzy Lee (VAV - moving image) and Karolina Hyun Wilting (VAV - moving image). RietveldTV by Mingrui Jiang: USE ME, FEED ME
This video serves as visual research for my new project centered around (Death)Feedism: a subculture/fetish where individuals find sexual arousal in gaining weight (referred to as 'feedees' or 'gainers') or encouraging others to do so ('feeders' or‘encouragers').Sacrifice walking, moving and even breathing to your insatiable gluttony… I found it so liberating in its literal enactment, becoming a powerful vehicle to portray the complexities of insatiable desire within the context of contemporary late capitalist society.Playing with deep-seated fears of self-alienation and impending destruction, the video is a way to confront and, in a sense, attempt to revel in them internally and physically.P.S. from the curatorial team:Mingrui was invited because the immediate physical response we had when we saw Mingrui's work, fascinated us. Her approach of crushing the barrier between our physical bodies fit with our theme 'the third skin' and left us excited, thrilled and scared at the same time.---This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 23/24: The Third Skin. The RietveldTV curatorial team 23/34 were: Feliz Aaliyah Sanchez Buitrago (Fashion), Mayya Kuznetsova (Fine Arts), Jiyeon Izzy Lee (VAV - moving image) and Karolina Hyun Wilting (VAV - moving image). RietveldTV by Masha Ryabova: S&M
“dear doctor M, maybe you don’t remember me, you being such a big star now, but i remember you! i love your career! i have been following it, and i know all your lines. well you stay up late, you go to bars, you see too many movies, you don’t write to me at all! what do i do now? i am lonely out of my mind! is there a cure? sometimes during after-hours — for fun and no other reason — i fantasise about my blood pouring outwards, an inexhaustible current of red that spread and spreads and spreads until it eventually seeps into every corner of the — all over the world! — signed, Shadow & Myself” One meaning of the word “monster” is a creature who is entirely self-dependent. In response to the theme of “Third Skin” the episode deals with some of the troubles that plague the linguistic animal, who is constantly in danger of overreaching itself and bringing itself to nothing (in contrast to other mammals, who organise an environment for themselves that does not stretch much beyond their bodies). Loosely based on Cookie Mueller’s advice column, and anchored in personal experiences of isolation and exhaustion, the film follows a protagonist roleplaying the onset and possible resolutions of a health crisis.P.S. from the curatorial team:Works that Masha presented at the Graduation show, stuck in our mind as absorbing and at times repulsive imagery puzzled with words so direct, they get under your skin and make you speechless. We held our breath waiting for Masha’s revealing take on our theme. This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 23/24: The Third Skin. The RietveldTV curatorial team 23/34 were: Feliz Aaliyah Sanchez Buitrago (Fashion), Mayya Kuznetsova (Fine Arts), Jiyeon Izzy Lee (VAV - moving image) and Karolina Hyun Wilting (VAV - moving image). RietveldTV by Bea Lamadrid Bayón: Where Does Life Happen?
Life happens inside or outside? When I’m walking, do I look at my feet or at the ground? When I have my eyes open, do I see what is there or what I am thinking about?Too many doors, all there facing your body, front, back, sideways, past, present. Choose. Meanwhile, life will do it for you.“Where Does Life Happen?” Is created with archives, playing with the idea of connecting worlds and times. It searches for grief, lighting, celebration and space for the other. The answer is given. Let’s create life together.About the artist:Bea Lamadrid Bayón is a Spanish video artist, performance director, and producer who graduated from VAV - Moving Image in 2024. In her visual work, ranging from videodance and video art to documentary, Bea plays with reality to offer new perspectives, allowing narratives to emerge through encounters between characters, elements, images, and constructed situations. She approaches archives and editing as narrative devices to explore multiple possible trajectories. In her performance practice, she works with social realities, characters, and shifting perceptions to challenge the position of the audience, as well as their relationship to sound and space. Directing the attention toward provocation, intimacy, and human conflict, confronting taboos and emotional tensions. Her next performance "GAZE" will be presented on March 14 and 15 at Droog in Amsterdam.Bea is Co-funder of Piloto (@pilotoclub), a Performance Residency + Event Series in Sevilla. It is a platform that decentralises live art and creates space for experimentation and cross-disciplinary exchange. Soon the 3rd edition! ---This Episode is part of the 2025/2026 season of RietveldTV: A DATE WITH THE FUTURE, curated by the current curatorial team: Taša Grujić (VAV), Netta Simola (VAV), Luca Deutinger (DOGtime Expanded Painting) and Herkules Jansson (VAV).

RietveldTV by Guido van der Werve: Akte twaalf - nocturne for dad.
When your age matches your parent’s birth year, then that parent is the age of your birth year.Note from the curatorial team:Guido van der Werve is a Dutch artist known for his works of short and feature films all numbered chronologically. He finds it interesting how some say that the difference between humans and animals is that humans understand that they die. In this RietveldTV-episode he explores the different layers of reality related to the memory of his father’s death. This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 24/25: RatveldTV: Two Truths and a Lie.🐀The RietveldTV curatorial team 24/25 were: Saskia den Hartigh (DOGtime), Bjarke Tobias Fuglsbjerg (VAV), Lefteris Katsarakis (VAV), Sara Darle Olsson (Architectural Design). RietveldTV by Donny Ronny: I Am Art Myself
Donny Ronny, the artist name of Rietveld alumnus Gover Meit (formerly known as Stefano Keizers) is proud to present an episode of Rietveld / RATveld TV. The episode, named “I am art myself” explores the question of what it means to be a true artist. Being a contemporary clown with a focus on the ‘reality’ of things, Donny Ronny reflects on the lessons that he's learned. Through the eyes and wisdom of Burkina Faso based artist Papa Adama, we learn a little true philosophy. By connecting Papa’s purist lifestyle to young and aspiring artist Jessica Kuhn’s fresh look on things, we are confronted with two different roads we could take - both artificial, both as real as can be.But in the end, as usual, we are left alone with lies.Note from the curatorial team:Donny Ronny, formerly known as Stefano Keizers, is a Dutch artist known for pushing the boundaries of cabaret. By playing with alter egos, his work naturally blurs the line between fiction and non-fiction.---This episode was produced for the RietveldTV season 24/25: RatveldTV: Two Truths and a Lie.🐀The RietveldTV curatorial team 24/25 were: Saskia den Hartigh (DOGtime), Bjarke Tobias Fuglsbjerg (VAV), Lefteris Katsarakis (VAV), Sara Darle Olsson (Architectural Design).
